Call to Enhance the Culture of Dialogue

04 May Call to Enhance the Culture of Dialogue

HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al-Misned called for the need to enhance the culture of dialogue among diverse populations and not just elite groups. Every civilisation according to her possesses many positive and constructive attributes that together can host the contemporary human civilization, a civilization of freedom, equality and respect. She noted in her speech delivered on the occasion of the UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day and Freedom of the Press Award Ceremony for the year 2009 hosted for two days at the InterContinental Doha.
The role of a responsible and professional press, as well as the role of education to bring positions closer and bridge the gap, is essential. “This in my view is the path towards achieving reconciliation among people and cultures.” She added that this reconciliation should not be tactical, rather it stems from a strategic vision aimed at achieving the objective of living in harmony and that we should forget the past while benefitting from its lessons in order to build the future.
She expressed her belief that in order for this vision to materialise beyond political and geographical borders, a multi faceted responsibility must be adopted in order to establish professional journalism in harmony with the objectives of the third millennium. This responsibility should be based on credibility and objectivity, respecting differences and diversity in order to raise the level of intellect and general tastes, and that is where the missions of both journalism and education meet.
“We cannot be interested in achieving the principle of education for everyone, raising its quality, and supporting critical thinking and analytical research without having in parallel a journalistic path having the same objectives and beliefs,” she said.
